Local Activities

Macleod's maidens - sea stacks on Skye

This is a lovely quiet location for those wishing to get away from it all, or to return to after a great evening in Portree. We have some lovely walks locally with a sandy beach 2 miles away and a circular walk takes you through some old woods up a hill beside a waterfall and onto the open moor with a lovely seat to rest and reflect on the breath taking views.

The Cuillin mountains are a short drive from the cottage and these stunning peaks offer some of the most challenging walking and climbing in Scotland. The ridge of the Black Cuillin includes 12 Munros and is a mecca for hillwalkers wishing to experience the amazing scenery of the gabbro and basalt ridge. Local guides (see Richard McGuire, Skye Guiding) can help with route finding and accessing the more difficult peaks such as the Inaccessible Pinnacle, a moderate climb. Whilst having breakfast we sometimes see bottle-nosed dolphins, porpoise and occasionally we marvel at the sighting of a minkie whale. The little bay at Camus Tianavaig is a lovely unspoilt picnic spot with always a few inquisitive seals watching you.

Aros the heritage centre is just on the road to Portree and is well worth a visit. Here you can see a live video of the Sea Eagle on its nest, there is also a cafe and cinema, books and gift's. Local boats are also available from the harbour in Portree to watch the Sea Eagles being fed.

There is a wide choice of places to eat. Restaurants such as the Harbour View and Sea Breezes specialises in locally caught sea food and have both been praised by many of our guests. If it's just a snack you require then there are also several excellent Cafes in Portree.

You could even have a day trip to the Outer Isles of Harris, Lewis or North Uist. A coach meets the regular ferry and takes you round the islands so you can relax and take in the very different and exciting landscape. April is a lovely month to visit with all the fresh spring flowers and beautiful rays of sun shining through the mountains.
